US Coast Guard offloads $475M of cocaine, marijuana in Miami

The U.S. Coast Guard offloaded thousands of narcotics in Miami, Florida, this week worth an estimated $475 million.

Coast Guard crews seized about 24,700 pounds of cocaine and nearly 3,900 pounds of marijuana on Thursday at Base Miami Beach, the branch said in a press release.

The crews interdicted the drugs in the international waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ reveals mithril’s origin story

Durin, a red-bearded dwarf in armor, stands in a great hall of dwavres with his fist raised.

Episode 4 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power finally reveals what the dwarves of Khazad-dûm have been mining in secret: mithril!

A precious metal invented by J.R.R. Tolkien for his novels, mithril is both incredibly light and impossibly strong. Plus, its beauty never fades. If it sounds familiar, that’s because mithril plays a key role in the Third Age of Middle-earth. Thorin gifts Bilbo a shirt of mithril mail in The Hobbit, which Bilbo then gifts in turn to Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring. That shirt saves Frodo’s life during combat; without mithril, he would have been a total goner. However, that’s all Third Age business. The Rings of Power takes place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, so we get to see how the world reacts to the first discovery of such a precious ore.

How does mithril fit into The Rings of Power?

Elrond, an elf in a grey robe, and Durin, a red-bearded dwarf in brown armor, face each other in a mine.

Let’s talk mithril.

While visiting Khazad-dûm, Elrond (Robert Aramayo) finds that Prince Durin (Owain Arthur) and the dwarves have been covertly mining a newly discovered substance. In the dwarven tongue, the name for the metal means “grey glitter.” When translated to Sindarin, you get the Elven word “mithril.”

Durin tells Elrond that Princess Disa (Sophia Nomvete) was the first to detect mithril. Upon learning of its lightness and durability, Durin reckons that it could be the start of a new era for the dwarves. Unfortunately, mithril proves dangerous to mine, and his father would rather exercise caution than launch full-speed ahead into a mining endeavor.

If you’re familiar with Middle-earth history, you’ll know that the mining proceeds anyway, lasting all the way into the Third Age. The dwarves delve too greedily and too deep in their search for mithril, awakening a terrible Balrog and forcing them to abandon Khazad-dûm for good. This Balrog is the very same being that the Fellowship of the Ring encounters in the Mines of Moria.

Since much of The Rings of Power takes liberties with Tolkien’s work, it’s safe to say that this origin story for mithril is a new invention for the show. However, Tolkien didn’t write much about the finding of mithril at all. In Appendix B of The Lord of the Rings, he mentions that elves moved to Eregion when they learned of the dwarves’ discovery of mithril in Moria, but that’s about it.

The Rings of Power has taken some liberties with this information, as Eregion is already established by the time the dwarves have found mithril. Still, this change opens up some interesting narrative possibilities for the future. Elrond swore to Durin that he would keep mithril a secret — will his loyalty to the elves be tested against his friendship to Durin? Will mithril be another point of tension between the dwarves and the elves?

Most pressingly: What does the emphasis on mithril mean for the actual forging of the Rings of Power? Based on the name of the show, we know the creation of the Rings of Power (including the One Ring) will play a large part in this series. Perhaps mithril will figure more largely into the actual forging of the rings.

In Tolkien’s work, only one of the rings — Nenya, the ring worn by Galadriel – is explicitly described as being made of mithril. However, given the lack of detail about some of the other rings and The Rings of Power‘s tendency to diverge from what’s on the page, I wouldn’t be surprised if more of the Rings of Power got the mithril treatment moving forward.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is now streaming on Prime Video. New episodes release every Friday at 12 a.m. ET.

Biden says Republicans are ‘playing politics’ after transporting migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, VP’s home

President Joe Biden called on Republican governors Thursday to stop sending migrants into Democratic cities and communities, calling such actions “political stunts” and “un-American.”

During an address at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute gala, Biden accused Republicans of “playing politics” and using migrants as “props” after dozens of migrants were sent to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts and to Vice President Kamala Harris’s residence in Washington, D.C.

“Republicans are playing politics with human beings, using them as props. What they’re doing is simply wrong, it’s un-American, it’s reckless,” Biden said Thursday.

“We have a process in place to manage migrants at the border,” the president added. “We’re working to make sure it’s safe and orderly and humane. Republican officials should not interfere with that process by waging a politically political stance.”

MASSACHUSETTS DEMS REACT AFTER DESANTIS TRANSPORTS MIGRANTS INTO RITZY MARTHA’S VINEYARD: ‘EVIL AND INHUMANE’

Biden did not name any Republicans during his comments, though Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took credit for flying migrants to Massachusetts on Wednesday and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott took credit for transporting migrants to Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

The two Republican governors have continuously criticized Biden and Democratic lawmakers for failing to secure the southern border and leaving border states to fend for themselves in managing the ongoing immigration crisis.

MARTHA’S VINEYARD HOMELESS ADVOCATE SAYS MIGRANTS THERE WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE TO MOVE ‘SOMEWHERE ELSE’

Republicans have also condemned Democratic policies, which they claim are incentivizing migrants to come to the U.S.

Biden, however, is blaming Senate Republicans for holding up a plan that would provide legal protections and citizenship to some migrants in the country illegally.

“It’s long overdue for Senate Republicans to come to the table, provide a pathway for citizenship for Dreamers, those in temporary status, farm workers and essential workers. We need to modernize our laws so businesses get workers they need and families don’t have to wait decades to be brought back together,” Biden told the gala attendees.

He added: “It’s time to get it done. That’s why we have to win this off-year election.”

Biden’s comments came after he appeared to ignore a question about migrants being sent to Martha’s Vineyard earlier in the day, shortly after delivering remarks celebrating a tentative deal by railroad unions to avoid a strike.

Biden’s criticism of migrant transportation was echoed by the White House Thursday, as White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre referred to it as an “illegal stunt.”

“The White House is full of a bunch of hypocrites, led by the Hypocrite-in-Chief who has been flying planeloads of migrants across the country and oftentimes in the cover of night,” Abbott’s Press Secretary Renae Eze responded in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Neither Biden nor the White House made any mention of how Democrats initiated the transportation of migrants, sending them from border housing facilities via middle-of-the-night flights into various parts of the country.

Jimmy Kimmel has apologized to Quinta Brunson for hijacking her Emmy win

A screenshot of Quinta Brunson on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Freshly minted Emmy winner Quinta Brunson has received a personal apology from Jimmy Kimmel, after the late night host was widely criticized for ruining her winning moment.

On Monday, Brunson was awarded the Emmy in Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her work on Abbott Elementary‘s pilot episode. It was a momentous occasion made all the more special by the fact that this was her first year as a nominee.

Unfortunately, Kimmel sullied the moment by making what should have been Brunson’s moment all about him instead. After being physically dragged onstage by fellow comedian Will Arnett, Kimmel lay at Brunson’s feet and refused to budge throughout her entire acceptance speech. He quickly received significant backlash for this disrespectful act, prompting him to apologize directly to Brunson during his show on Wednesday.

“That was a dumb comedy bit that we thought it would be funny — I lost, and then I drank too much and I had to be dragged out on the stage,” said Kimmel, attempting to explain himself as soon as Brunson was seated. “And then people got upset. They said I stole your moment, and maybe I did. And I’m very sorry if I did do that — I’m sorry I did do that, actually. And also, the last thing I would ever want to do is upset you because I think so much of you, and I think you know that. I hope you know that.”

A class act, Brunson graciously thanked Kimmel for apologizing, and generously diffused any negative sentiments by instead focusing on how excited she was to win her first Emmy.

“I was wrapped up in the moment and just having a good time,” said Brunson. “I don’t know, I didn’t see any of that. I saw you and I saw Will Arnett and my Emmy, and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, I’m having so much fun!’ But thank you, that’s kind. But honestly, I had a good night.”

A more robust US presence in Syria could deter Iran, Russia and other threats and ensure stability, experts

The Biden administration’s Syria policy has a laser-like focus on combating the largely defeated Islamic State terrorist movement, but some observers say it appears to be short-sighted when it comes to zooming in on the growing threat from both Iran and Russia which could lead to more instability across the Islamic heartland.

“We have had three administrations that have not prioritized Syrian stability. If you do not attend to it, it attends to you, like the main problems in the Middle East. The instability in Syria spills over to broader changes,” said Brian Katulis, a senior fellow and vice president of policy at the Middle East Institute.

Katulis told Fox News Digital: “The instability in Syria broke the world in the last decade. Syria broke the rules of war because [President Bashar] Assad and Russia murdered hundreds of thousands of civilians.” The Syrian civil war caused waves of migration that disrupted politics in Europe and the U.S., he noted.

“What happens in Syria does not stay there,” he said, but the U.S. mandate is limited to degrading the power of the Islamic State. “The presence we have in Syria is a goldilocks presence, not too big, not too small, just right,” said Katulis.

US LAUNCHES SECOND SET OF STRIKES IN SYRIA AGAINST IRANIAN-BACKED MILITIAS

There are roughly 900 U.S. troops, including Green Berets, in Syria.

For Sinam Mohamad, the representative of the Syrian Democratic Council in the U.S., the presence of American troops can advance a troika of American security interests.

The Syrian Democratic Council is the political wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance of Kurdish, Arab and Assyrian/Syriac forces, as well as some smaller Armenian, Turkmen and Chechen defense units

“Terrorism is still threatening the whole world, and the Islamic State and al-Qaeda are still in northeastern and northwestern Syria,” Mohamad told Fox News Digital.

She cited three reasons an enduring American presence in Syria is needed.

“First, as long as these terrorist organizations are there, the threat to the U.S. and the whole world will continue. It is very important to end terrorism in Syria in partnership with Kurdish security forces”, she said.

IRAN, SYRIA CONSIDER FORMING JOINT OIL AND GAS COMPANY, STATE MEDIA SAYS

Second, “if the U.S. withdraws, it will empower Iran like in Iraq.” She said American deterrence “prevents regional interference from Turkey and Iran.”

Third, “For 11 years there has been no political solution” to end the high-intensity combat. “We could wind up going back to before 2011, [when the civil war began], without any changes in the Syrian regime. This will empower the regime to control Syria without making any changes for democracy,” Mohamad said.

“We need to democratize Syria,” she said. “The U.S. will help and support us with democracy. The U.S. will be empowering our position when negotiating with the Syrian regime, empowering a democratic system based on equal gender and freedom of religion. This will give us a chance to build a unique model in the Middle East.”

U.S. CENTCOM chief Gen. Erik Kurilla recently stated that Syria is becoming the “breeding ground” for a new generation of Islamic State terrorists.

CENTCOM CHIEF BELIEVES SYRIA IS ‘BREEDING GROUND’ FOR NEXT GENERATION OF ISIS

Brig. Gen. (res.) Erez D. Maisel, who served 32 years in the Israel Defense Forces and is an expert on Syria, told Fox News Digital that the country is “important because of where she is, specifically, for Europe, Israel, Russia and Iran. Who rules Syria says a lot about the Middle East.”

Maisel noted that the Kurdish areas in northern Syria “are of interest to Israel because we see a lot of common interests. We have good connections to the Kurds. They are a minority, and we are a minority.”

Kurdish forces have conducted sweeps over the last few weeks to root out Islamic State terrorists from the sprawling al-Hol refugee camp in northern Syria that lodges 55,000 residents. The American military is a keen supporter of the anti-ISIS crackdown in the camp.

Maisel said “Most importantly, Syria being at the intersection between Iran and the Med, the land bridge, is critical for any improved future for the people of the Levant.

ISRAELI PM TO FOX: ‘WE WELCOME THE US STRIKES AGAINST THE IRANIAN REVOLUTIONARY GUARDS IN SYRIA’

“Prolonged disruption of Iranian control of this crucial line of communication is strategically important not only to Israel, but to regional stability impacting European – NATO interests. A mission that requires measured U.S. support – just enough presence to deny Iranian freedom of movement (and ISIS resurrection).”

He added “The two important choke points into Syria are: Kurdish north (Euphrates zone of operations), basically Syrian Defense Forces controlled areas, and the tri-border area between Kingdom of Jordan, Syria and Iraq. Specifically, the U.S. CENTCOM Al Tanf Garrison.

“An important stopgap interdicting Iranian intentions to develop a supply line from Teheran, through Iraq into Syria and Lebanon.”

Meanwhile, on Monday, speaking at The Jerusalem Post Conference in New York, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz presented a map showing more than 10 facilities in Masyaf, in northwestern Syria, that Iran uses to manufacture advanced missiles and other weapons for its proxies. The facilities pose a significant threat to Israel and the region, he said.

Critics of the Iran atomic accord are deeply concerned that Iran’s regime will use the sanctions relief funds to pump cash into the coffers of Assad’s regime and boost terrorism in Syria against U.S. troops.

On Wednesday, the United States Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced the U.S. had provided an additional $756 million dollars in humanitarian assistance to the people of Syria. The amount is in addition to the $800 million in humanitarian aid announced in May by the administration.

A spokesperson for the State Department declined comment for this report and referred Fox News Digital to the Pentagon.
