Florida sergeant arrested after allegedly writing nearly a dozen inappropriate letters to teen inmate

A police sergeant working at a Florida juvenile detention center is now behind bars herself after she allegedly wrote nearly a dozen inappropriate letters to a 16-year-old inmate.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that Sgt. Katelyn Gomez, 27, is charged with one count of solicitation of a child to engage in an act that constitutes sexual battery by a person in familial or custodial authority.

Gomez was hired by the sheriff’s office on Jan. 5 and worked as a sergeant at the Pinellas Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Clearwater.

Gomez’s alleged relationship with the teenage inmate was uncovered when detectives responded to a call from the detention facility reporting approximately ten inappropriate letters found in his bed.

While investigating the letters, detectives learned they were written by Gomez.

“The letters explicitly described what would take place during their first sexual encounter and described an ongoing relationship which had developed while the victim was incarcerated,” the sheriff’s office said, adding that a photo of Gomez was also found in the boy’s cell.

When she was interviewed by detectives, Gomez allegedly admitted to writing the letters and said she and the boy began developing a relationship when they met several weeks ago.

The sheriff’s office said she had been assigned to the boy’s pod for the past three weeks.

Gomez had been instructed to not be alone with an inmate, but staff at the facility told the sheriff’s office she was alone with the boy “several times.”

Gomez also told detectives that “she fantasized about having a sexual relationship with the victim and planned to build a life with him once he was released,” according to the PCSO.

She was booked into the Pinellas County Jail.

The best air fryers for every kitchen

An air fryer

This content originally appeared on Mashable for a US audience and has been adapted for the UK audience.

Remember how the air fryer became the new cooking fad during lockdown? Well, several years on it’s become more than that: a must-have kitchen appliance. The appeal, of course, is a combination of easy cooking — just chuck your food in, press a button, and occasionally stir — and the fact that using air fryers is healthier.

If you’re in the market for an air fryer — and, indeed, a healthier diet — we’ve put together a list of the best models. But before we tuck in, here’s some helpful info.

What is an air fryer?

Simply put, it’s like a deep fryer without the oil. In other words, deep frying without the unhealthy part. Some people might say cut back on fried foods, but is that really the only option? Nope. Deep fryers heat food from frozen to ready-to-eat in minutes by dunking them in a bath of super hot oil. This is how your food gets brown and crispy and delicious, but also drenched in fat. While your typical deep fryer needs enough oil to completely drown the food, an air fryer barely uses any. A tablespoon at most.

How does an air fryer work?

Air fryers use a convection fan to surround the food with hot air instead of oil. The air bounces off the bottom of the air fryer and back up through the food, cooking it all over to create a crisping effect in a matter of minutes — something that was previously only possible with deep frying. Not only are you getting that great taste and texture, but you’re getting it in just a fraction of the time. And more healthily.

Air fryers can also cook more foods than a deep fryer. They can be used for things like grilling steaks or baking pizzas. It’s like having a combo oven and deep fryer, except it fits on your counter and it doesn’t require you to thaw out your frozen food first.

Are air fryers actually healthy?

Eliminating the guilt from guilty pleasure eating is one of the reasons you want an air fryer, right? Manufacturers claim that air frying can reduce calorie intake by up to 80%, so yes, air frying is certainly a much better alternative. They’re health-ier. However, scientists aren’t messing around with the whole “moderation is key” thing, and calories aren’t the only factor to measure health.

Owning an air fryer doesn’t mean that a diet consisting of french fries and pizza is OK. Making sure you get those plant-based oils and vitamins from fruits and veggies should still be a priority. If you’ve got a picky eater at home, air fryers are a great way to crisp up courgettes, carrots, squash, and more to give them added taste and crunch, teaching kids that they don’t always have to run for cover when the veggies come out.

What is the best air fryer?

As with any appliances, there are various sizes, features, and options from all of the major brands you’d expect. We’ll keep it simple and fill you in on the need-to-know details and differences, so your brain doesn’t get too, erm, fried.

These are the best air fryers in 2024.

GREG GUTFELD: Doing the same thing over and over again and denying the outcome is intentionality

Happy Monday, everybody. So over the years, politicians have given us a number of policy wars. We’ve had the war on poverty, the war on drugs, the war on terror. None worked, but at least Kat’s not allowed to fly. But today, the Biden administration is giving us a new war. Call it the war on observable facts, or WOOF. Thank you. Here are the results. We have a border that works less than Kilmeade’s breath mints, inflation more stubborn than a mule trying to learn break dancing, and a crime wave that makes the purge look like Bible study with Shannon Bream.

So by what metric does Team Biden think all of this is working? What the White House calls their major policy initiatives, the rest of us call “ideas going over like a full diaper on a packed flight.” They’re peeing on your foot and telling you it’s raining, which is why I stopped showering with Kudlow. Does anyone see evidence of a course correction? A willingness to maybe switch it up a bit? Nope. Maybe they hope we’ve all been so distracted that we won’t even notice, but we’re at a point that we have to ask ourselves, are all these outcomes by design? Now, I’m no conspiracy theorist, although I’m this close to proving Bigfoot was on Epstein’s island. But clearly, when something isn’t working and a group of theoretically intelligent people happily double down on it, there must be an explanation. And we have a few.

One is the idea of fractal wrongness, the idea that your worldview is so wrong that you’ll be wrong 100% of the time. This helps explain how people think letting murderers out of jail will somehow make us safer. The other is that there’s a net benefit to them in destroying this country. On the border, we’ve had millions of illegals walking into the country where they’re guaranteed pretty much everything but a knob job from Sofia Vergara. It’s now becoming clear that many of them are criminals. Organized shoplifting and robbery crews are operating in all our major cities. If they pulled that in Venezuela, they’d be put in jail, then sent back to America. Prison gang bangers assault our cops and shoot at them. Monsters allegedly kill our young women. Which brings us to Laken Riley. Maybe her murder will finally force the question: why does this keep happening?

LAKEN RILEY MURDER SUSPECT JOSE IBARRA LIVED WITHIN 5-MINUTE WALK OF UGA CRIME SCENE

Well, according to the AP, it’s about the dangers of running alone. Seriously, here’s their headline,”The killing of a nursing student out for a run highlights the fears of solo female athletes.” It’s as if she died from shin splints. And in that piece, they called the suspect an “Athens resident,” not an illegal immigrant who’d been arrested multiple times. You know, that’s like calling Hitler a vegetarian from Austria. So only when someone escalates to murder do they finally get held and risk deportation. Do you think that would be the story? And it should be the story that sinks that administration. Because when Biden refuses to take simple steps to secure the border, like, for instance, reinstituting “Remain in Mexico,” you have to ask what I call the NLQ- the next logical question. Is this what they want? Is the policy actually designed for open and unchecked borders? Is it so we finally get better soccer players and win the World Cup?

The same goes for the crime and disorder in our cities. People forget that in 2022, Joe Biden introduced his major national anti-crime initiative, the Safer America Plan, SAP for short. It might as well stand for stabbed and pummeled. In SAPS we were for believing it might help. His anti-crime initiative actually made us less safe. What’s next? Fighting chlamydia by having sex with a stripper? Trust me, it doesn’t work. So our cities remain unpoliced dystopias. And if Blacks are killing more Blacks and the left does nothing to stop it, then again, you got to ask why. If homelessness keeps growing dramatically and you do nothing to stop it, why? If human trafficking is an observable outcome from illegal immigration, yet illegal immigration continues unabated, why? If inflation’s high, but you keep forgiving student debt and proposing expensive legislation, why? If a president whose brainwaves are flatter than the View’s seat cushions. But we continue to pretend otherwise. Why? You see what I mean?

BIDEN ADMITS ‘BROKEN’ IMMIGRATION SYSTEM IN MEETING WITH GOVERNORS AS MIGRANTS MASS-RELEASED IN CALIFORNIA

Our nation’s precious talking heads, they love to repeat the same cliche, do the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. No, it’s not. Doing the same thing over and over again, and denying the outcome is intentionality, not insanity. Now, I could posit theories that deep down, they want to destroy our major traditions and institutions that, you know, like lunatic drill sergeants, they want to break us all down so they can rebuild us in their image. But that’s like putting Megan Fox under the knife so she’ll end up looking like Madonna. It’s an image that will almost certainly be a lot more subservient and dependent, an image where we all look to the government for our wants and needs, a government controlled by the Democrats forever.

So it’s time to change the argument. It can’t be about policy results anymore. Dems lost that on day one when Joe eliminated all Trump’s border policies. How’d that work out for you? Feel free to answer in Spanish. So Dems prove to us that all of this is not unintentional. Why would an entire political party design a system so awful? See, our job is not to answer that. It’s the Dems. They’re the architects. All I’ve done is change the argument. It’s no longer, “you don’t want a real border. Oh, yes we do.” No, that ship has sailed and sunk.

TCL’s new phones and tablets are easy on the eyes

TCL NXTPAPER

TCL’s mission for 2024 appears to be making sure their users don’t get a headache.

Ahead of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the company unveiled an extensive lineup of smartphones and tablets, most of them using the company’s NXTPAPER tech which reduces blue light and implements an anti-glare coating to make the displays easy on the eyes.

Very few things are strictly new here, as TCL previewed these devices at CES in January; but the company now shared the detailed specs and pricing for all of the new phones and tablets, as well as announced some additional variants.

There are 9 (yes, nine) new phones in TLC’s new lineup, as well as three new tablets, but several of these models differ only by whether they have the NXTPAPER tech, and whether they support 5G or not.

TCL 50 XL NXTPAPER 5G

You can get a phone with NXTPAPER tech, too.
Credit: Stan Schroeder/Mashable

The new TCL 50 XL 5G offers a 6.8-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a triple 50-megapixel camera, stereo speakers, a massive 5,010mAh battery, and 5G support while retailing for under $169 when it becomes available at Metro by T-Mobile in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2024. The NXTPAPER version of the same phone will be available from TCL for under $229, also in Q3 2024.

As for tablets, the most powerful device in this bunch is the TCL NXTPAPER 14 Pro, a 14-inch tablet that retails for $549. There’s also the new, slightly cheaper TCL NXTPAPER 14, which retails for under $400, while the TCL TAB 10 NXTPAPER 5G (yes, TCL really likes caps) is an entry-level $250 tablet that should hit North America in the second quarter of the year.

You don’t want or need to know the specs of all these devices. These are the sort of phones that you’ll probably buy from a carrier when you need something that doesn’t break the bank. But I can share some hands-on experience with TCL’s NXTPAPER tech, which is actually pretty cool.

TCL NXTPAPER 14 Pro

You can choose between Regular mode, Color Paper mode, and Ink Paper mode.
Credit: Stan Schroeder/Mashable

I’ve had some hands-on time with all of TCL’s new products, and I can say that the difference in the NXTPAPER ones is noticeable. From the get-go, their displays really do look like photos printed on actual paper. They’re matte, and thus better to use in sunlight than the displays on most phones and tablets. They appear perfectly still and perfectly flat, for lack of better words.

Additionally, the displays can be shifted into several different modes, with the ColorPpaper mode being even easier on the eyes. The most extreme one, called Ink Paper, turns the display into something that really looks like e-ink, even though it isn’t. These display modes do take a while to load, but someone who has headaches from phone/tablet use will probably appreciate the option.

Right now, TCL doesn’t have a true flagship competitor, so you’ll have a hard time replacing your Samsung Galaxy phone or an iPhone with one of TCL’s NXTPAPER phones. But the NXTPAPER tech does work. It’s something I didn’t know I needed, but now I wish other manufacturers followed suit.

Houthis nearly strike oil tanker in Gulf of Aden; US, coalition forces take out more one-way attack drones

U.S. Central Command said Sunday that Houthis launched an anti-ballistic missile toward a tanker ship that carries oil and chemicals in the Gulf of Aiden on Saturday, though it struck the water and did not cause damage to the ship or injuries to those on board.

In a post on X, U.S. Central Command said the Iranian-backed Houthis were likely targeting the M/V Torm Thor, which is flagged and owned by a U.S. company. The ship was sailing in the Gulf of Aden at the time of the incident, which was reportedly at 11:45 p.m. local time.

At about 9 p.m. that evening, U.S. Central Command forces shot down two one-way unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) over the Red Sea in self-defense.

Central Command said a third UAV was also heading toward the area and crashed from what appeared to be an in-flight failure.

US, COALITION FORCES DESTROY 6 HOUTHI ONE-WAY ATTACK DRONES

“CENTCOM forces identified the UAVs and determined they presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and to the U.S. Navy ships in the region,” Central Command said. “These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy and merchant vessels.”

Houthi attacks continue to take place in the region, despite efforts from the U.S. and allies to protect merchant ships.

On Thursday, Houthis fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles from southern Yemen into the Gulf of Aden, but that time, the missiles impacted the MV Islander, a Palau-flagged, U.K.-owned, cargo carrier causing one minor injury and damage.

GREEK-FLAGGED M/V SEA CHAMPION SUSTAINS MINOR DAMAGE IN HOUTHI MISSILE ATTACK

The attack came after the Pentagon confirmed the Houthis shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone off the coast of Yemen on Monday, marking the second such attack since November 2023.

Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists also fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles at a Greek-flagged ship headed to Yemen to deliver grain on Monday, causing minor damage, according to U.S. Central Command.

CARGO SHIP ‘TAKING IN WATER’ FOLLOWING ATTACK BY HOUTHIS IN GULF OF ADEN

Despite the minor damage on the U.S.-owned M/V Sea Champion, the ship continued on course to Aden in Yemen, where it ultimately delivered the grain for the benefit of the Yemeni people.

Central Command said the M/V Sea Champion has delivered humanitarian aid to the country 11 times over the past five years.

Fox News’ Greg Norman and Liz Friden contributed to this report.

Indiana teacher found dead in school stairwell after not coming outside for relative to pick him up

An Indiana teacher who failed to walk outside his school after calling a relative to pick him up was found dead in a school stairwell the next morning, according to police.

Maintenance staff found Craig Jones, 47, dead Friday morning on the landing of a second-floor stairwell at East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School, East Chicago Police said.

A preliminary investigation found that Jones called his family Thursday night at about 10:30 p.m. to request a ride home after telling them earlier in the day he was working late.

A relative arrived at the school a short time later to pick him up, but Jones never came outside, and the relative drove away after receiving no additional phone calls from him, police wrote on Facebook.

Officers were called to the school on Pulaski Street at about 6:40 a.m. Friday after Jones’ body was discovered.

The cause of death remains under investigation by the Lake County Coroner’s Office, deputy coroner Eric Graf said Saturday.

The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is also investigating, but police said Friday there is currently “no reason to believe any foul play was involved.”
